Sports Physicals

The state of California requires all student athletes to undergo an examination by a licensed healthcare provider before participating in any particular sport.  This exam is to ensure the health and well-being of the participant before each individual season.

The licensed professional will establish the athletes past medical history which may include:

  • Any medications the patient is taking or has taken in the past
  • Any past surgeries, injuries or hospitalizations
  • Allergies (food, medication, insect bites)
  • Previous illnesses such as (asthma, diabetes, epilepsy)
  • Whether the patient has had chest pain, dizziness or has passed out during exercise

The physical exam will consist of checking the athletes’:

The doctor will listen to their heart, lungs, check abdomen, ears, nose, throat, joints, reflexes, strength, flexibility, and evaluate posture.  The physician will ask about alcohol or drug use or even ask about dietary supplements for weight loss which will have an adverse health effect. The doctor may even offer advice on exercises to strengthen or create flexibility to help avoid any future injuries.

It is highly unlikely that you will be excluded from participating in any sport or activity.  But if your blood pressure is high or blood sugar is not under control, the doctor may refer you to a specialist to get these ailments further evaluated.  Once these disorders are addressed, the physician will be able to clear you for full participation.  Dr. Jennifer Vaccaro charges $50 for all sports physicals and the exam only takes 15 minutes.
